Essential Financial Terms Explained
We cover these key concepts and more across your three sessions — demystified in plain, clear language.
📈 Stock Market
A marketplace where buyers and sellers trade shares of publicly listed companies. It reflects the collective value and sentiment of the economy.
💵 Portfolio
A collection of financial investments — like stocks, bonds, property or cash — held by an individual or institution to grow wealth over time.
₿ Cryptocurrency
Digital or virtual currency secured by cryptography and typically operating on decentralised blockchain technology. Examples include Bitcoin and Ethereum.
🔴 Stocks & Shares
Units of ownership in a company. When you buy a share, you own a small piece of that business and may benefit from its growth or profits.
🔗 Bonds
Loans made by investors to companies or governments, paid back with interest over time. Typically considered lower-risk than stocks.
🔥 ETFs
Exchange-Traded Funds are baskets of investments (stocks, bonds, etc.) that trade on a stock exchange — offering easy diversification.
🐕 Bull & Bear Market
A bull market means prices are rising and optimism is high. A bear market means prices are falling. Both are natural parts of financial cycles.
💰 Dividends
A share of a company’s profits distributed to shareholders, typically paid quarterly or annually as a reward for investing.
⚖️ Diversification
Spreading investments across different assets to reduce risk — the financial equivalent of not putting all your eggs in one basket.
🚫 Risk & Return
The relationship between potential gains and potential losses in investing. Higher potential returns typically come with higher risk.
👣 Index
A benchmark measuring the performance of a group of stocks (e.g., the S&P 500 or FTSE 100), used to track market trends overall.
🔉 Inflation
The rate at which the general price level of goods and services rises over time, reducing the purchasing power of money if not accounted for.
